assumeの覚えておきたい2つの意味を解説

assumeの一つ目の意味は、英英辞典を調べると、

「間違っていることもあるが、本当であると想像する」となっています。

「1.仮定する、想定する／思い込む」という意味をまず最初に覚えましょう。

Assuming that S+V, ～は、

「～だと仮定すると、もし～だとすると」という意味で、

Provided that S+V ／On the condition that S+V

とともに、

≓仮定法　If（もし～だとすると）の表現です。

次に覚えたいのが、

「2.（役目）を引き受ける、（責任）をとる」

という意味です。

assume his new job duty　新しい職務を引き受けた

とか

assume responsibility　責任を取る

というコロケーションで使われ、TOEIC頻出の表現です。

この意味では、

assume office　就任する（officeを引き受ける）で、という熟語を覚えておきましょう。

assumeの名詞形は、assumptionで、

on the assumption that S+Vで、

「～という想定で／前提で」という使い方もできます。

このようにassumeには、

「仮定する、推測する」以外に

「引き受ける、責任を取る」という意味がありますので、

また、「推測する、仮定する」という意味の単語として、

guess/suppose/presumeなどがあります。

supposeもpresumeも「仮定する、推測する」という意味ですが、

supposeは、assumeよりも若干根拠をもって推測しています。

presumeは、assumeよりも自信を持って推測していると言う違いがあります。
