one～/the other(others)～とone～/another～の違いを解説

今回は、

「一つは～で、」「残りのものは～です」というように、

複数のものの状態を説明したいときの表現を紹介したいと思います。

まず、次の3つの文の違いを考えてみましょう。

One shirt is yellow and the other is blue.

One shirt is yellow and the others are blue.

One shirt is yellow and another is blue.

まず、oneは、複数のシャツのなかのある一枚を指しています。

そして、

the otherは、2枚うちのうち残り一枚（特定できるのでtheがついている）を指し、

the othersは、複数枚のシャツの残り全て（特定できるのでtheがついている）を指しています。

また、

anotherは、複数あるうちのどれか一枚（特定できないのでtheはつけない）を指しています。

そのため、次のような意味の違いが生まれます。

One shirt is yellow and the other is blue.　一枚は黄色いシャツ、残りの一枚は青

One shirt is yellow and the others are blue.　一枚は黄色いシャツ、残りは全て青

One shirt is yellow and another is blue.　一枚は黄色いシャツ、他のシャツの一枚は青

また、この応用で、

Some～, others～／Some～, the others～も

複数のものの状態を説明する表現で、次のような意味になります。

some～, others～　いくつかは～、他のいくつかは～

some～, the others～　いくつかは～、他は全て～

このように、複数のものの状態は、

oneとsomeで最初のグループを説明して、

残りに関しては、

the other/the others---限定して、残りの全てを指す

another/others---限定しないで、残りの不特定な一部を指す

を組み合わせて、説明することができます。
