priorityとprecedence-意味の違いを解説
priorityとprecedenceは、
どちらも「優先」という意味を持っており、
同じような使われ方をします。
ここでは、この2語の違いを説明したいと思います。
priorityは、ビジネスの現場で、幅広く使われます。
「1.優先事項」という意味で、
Our first priority is～ 最優先事項は、～です
のように主語として使ったり、
「2.（重要性の）高さ、優先度／優先権」という意味で、
give more priority to evaluate strength 強度評価の優先度を上げる
のように「優先順位」の説明に使われます。
また、優先順位の「高い／低い」には、「high/low」を使います。

一方、precedenceは、
接頭語preに「前もって、先に」という意味があり、
「1.（時間、順序が）先であること、優先」
という意味の「優先」です。
Health takes(has) precedence over everything else. 健康は、他の何より優先される
「2.優先権」や「3.席次」という意味もあり、
He was given precedence over other people. 彼は、他の人よりも優先権を与えられた
The order of precedence was decided based on the ages. 席次は、年齢に基づいて決められた
のように使われます。
さらに、priorityとprecedenceは、
take(have)/give/putと組み合わせて使われることが多く、
次の3つは、熟語として覚えてしまいましょう。
take(have) priority/precedence over～ ～より優先です／～より優先権を持つ
give priority/precedence to～ ～の優先度を上げる
put priority on～ ～を重んじる

precedenceとprecedentの違い
precedenceが、「優先」という意味なのに対し、
precedentは、「前例」という意味で、次のように使われます。
There is no precedent for this kind of proposal. このような提案は、前例がない
また、
unprecedented 「前例のない」（↔precedented「前例のある」）
という形容詞も、TOEICによく登場しますので、覚えておきましょう。
