sureとcertainの違いを解説

sureとcertainは、

「確かな、確実な」という共通の意味を持っています。

今回は、この2語の違いを説明したいと思います。

まず、sureですが、

主観的な（話し手視点の）確信を表して、

「きっと成功する（と信じている）」

という意味で使われます。

I'm sure that you will succeed.=I'm sure of your success.　成功すると（私が）思っている

一方のcertainは、

客観的な（何かの情報をもとにした）確信を表して、

「（今までの実績などから）きっと成功すると考えている」

という意味で使われます。

I'm certain that you will succeed.=I'm certain of your success.　成功すると（客観的に）思っている

このように、

sureは主観的に、certainは客観的に、

「確かな、確実な」という意味を持っており、

I'm sure that～＝I'm certain that～

I'm sure of～

という形で使われると、「～を確信している」という意味になります。

また、次のように使われると意味が変わってきますので、

慣用句として覚えておきましょう。

◯ It's certain that～は、客観的確信を表す際に使われますが、
